The majority of Evangelical Christianity believes that Jesus Christ is going to return any moment now. They believe that we are living in the “last days” and that His return is soon. They look around the world and see all the evil rising and cannot help but think that Jesus is going to return any moment now.
I once held to this view. However, there is a danger in believing this view that I experienced in my life. A danger that robbed me of joy, robbed me of obeying God, and robbed me of seeking His honor and glory. The reason why this view has dangers is because if Jesus Christ is going to return any moment now, then there is no point in doing anything but surviving until he comes.
But if you believe Jesus Christ is going to return soon, then you should be working harder, not less. Remember what Jesus said:
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (ESV)
One thing is pretty clear from this passage: be busy doing as the Lord wants before He comes. Make it your aim to obey the Lord in all areas of life before He comes. If Jesus is going to return soon, then don’t be lazy like the wicked servant. Don’t think you don’t have to worry and don’t have responsibility. That is sinful.
We ought to occupy ourselves with obedience to the Lord. Notice that Jesus didn’t say to be occupied with waiting for His return. No, be occupied with doing as He commanded. That means caring for our families. That means loving our spouses. That means caring for the church. That means working hard. That means saving up for our future generations.
But why? Why save up for future generations if Jesus may return in 10 years? Because this world belongs to Christians, and the wealth you gather up now may be used in the New Heavens and New Earth.
In 1 Corinthians 6:3 Paul tells the Corinthians that they will judge angels. In 1 Corinthians 3:21-23 Paul tells the Corinthians that all things belong to them, the world, the people, whether it be the future or the present, whether it be life or death. So do things out of faith. If Jesus returns in a year, work in such a way as to make the world prepared for His return. If Jesus returns in a month, save up in such a way as to have something in His return that He may use.
We often simply believe about the End Times what we are told in Church. But study the scripture for yourself. As I have studied I find it difficult to say that Jesus will return in a year or ten or a hundred or a thousand. But I do know that Jesus Christ told me to obey Him and do as He has commanded, so I will do that, regardless if He returns now or in the future.
