As a massage therapist I talk to lots of people. Sometimes you don’t realize what you know is stuff most people don’t know until you learn that most people you talk to don’t know it. Here is one thing will help your immune system: Stay away from sugar.
There is a lot that can be said of what sugar does to the body. How many links of health problems can be attributed in part to sugar. One day, when I have time, I may write up something more in depth with some references to studies about the effects. For now, I will simply give a quick overview of my own experiences.
My mother always told me that if I was sick or around those who were sick to make sure I stayed away from sugar. I remember her telling me that sugar would suppress my immune system for a few hours. So I took what she said to heart and stayed away from sugar. Over the course of the years I found myself only getting sick once a year, whereas my friends were often sick three or four times a year. I also found that my friends would be sick for a week or two, sometimes a month. I was only ever sick for a day or two.
When my wife and I got married I implemented the same rule in my own house with my wife. She thought I was crazy at first but it’s been three years of marriage and she will often tell people that she didn’t believe me at first but that she has noticed a significant difference in avoiding sugar. She doesn’t get sick as often (she use to get sick almost on a monthly basis) and she doesn’t go to the hospital anywhere near as often (from four to five times a year to zero).
I’m not saying that staying away from sugar cures all sorts of things, but it definitely is something to consider if you’re getting sick often. It’s not the only thing that can weaken your immune system, but it definitely is a contributing factor to a weakened or suppressed immune system.
